In 2001 skier, climber, and mountaineer Eric Alexander defied the odds and scaled Mountain Everest while guiding a blind friend to the Summit. Eric shared his inspirational story at the recent NG Healthcare Payers Summit and how the selfless actions of a helicopter pilot in Nepal – who helped airlift Alexander to the hospital after a nasty fall during an earlier training climb – defines true meaning of healthcare.

Eric Alexander:

“You signed up and in the beginning you had a desire to help others. And maybe along the way, it’s turned into something else, maybe something else other than you envisioned. When I think of this guy, here’s a guy who stayed true to the cause, knowing that it goes beyond himself, that it transcends that, that he’s saving the life of someone else.

When I look out in this room, I see people who have that same kind of power or influence or ability to make a change for the better in someone else’s life.

When I hopped in that helicopter, I felt like the biggest loser on the planet. But he didn’t care. He didn’t care who I was or what I had done or hadn’t done. He just wanted to get me out of there, to take care of me. And he did”.
