What is ‘organizational development’ really about?
Ted Bauer·8 November 2016·People & Change
...Organizational development suffers from the same core business problem as many things -- it's hard to measure. Here's the basic deal with many jobs: even though senior leaders usually aren't very good at analyzing data in the context of decision-making, they nonetheless still believe that the only things deserving of their attention are measurable things. This comes from an all-consuming focus by many top dogs on financial metrics -- which can be measured and neatly arranged in spreadsheets, yes -- and causes concepts like employee engagement (harder to measure) to fall by the wayside (same with "talent strategy"). Your business is gagging on process
Ted Bauer·8 November 2016·People & Change
...Hmmm... business process. That's a multi-layered topic, no? Let me do my best here. I think the first place you need to begin is with the idea that for most senior executives -- or quote unquote decision-makers -- within an organization, business process is sacrosanct to the point that it's more important than people. That's probably not good: your processes and your products drive revenue, yes, but ... your people are those who interact with customers -- and apparently customer experience is now an important business trend -- and that has a lot of value too. There's long been confusion at organizations around 'how to treat customers' vs. 'how to treat employees,' and this whole thing is coming to a head in terms of business process recently. Read More...

The hiring process is a massive punchline
Ted Bauer·8 November 2016·People & Change
...My last couple of years have been pretty awkward in terms of hiring process. I worked at PBS from 2011 to 2012, then decided to go to graduate school. That kinda sorta turned out OK, but it took me a long time to get a job once I got my Masters. Then I moved down to Texas for that job, right? And ... 17 months later, I got fired. I don't really look for work right now -- I do a lot of freelance -- and while part of that is because I'm not sure how great I am with hierarchy and office jobs, part of it is because the hiring process is completely broken in America. Actionable feedback lessons from John Wooden
Ted Bauer·8 November 2016·People & Change
...How to give feedback is a pretty big business topic that we don't often seem to discuss. Hell, so is feedback in general. I'm a pretty big fan of the whole idea of 'feedback' and 'giving feedback' and feel like the concept should be a business advantage to most people, but unfortunately it's not -- and here's the visual to help you understand that: Here's the actual problem: a lot of managers don't actually like talking to their employees -- it feels awkward or uncomfortable for them. That makes sense largely because of how we've come to approach management -- namely the whole deal where you absolutely, positively cannot be friends with people who work for you. (That's actually just 1 of about 12 different types of horrible bosses you can have, FYI.) Read More...

Shouldn’t the antidote to “I’m so busy!” be more business simplicity?
Ted Bauer·8 November 2016·People & Change
...I've been thinking about this idea of simplicity in business for years now. Following this bouncing ball, right? At the same time you've got this clash between simplicity in business and everyone wanting to be busy all the time ( to showcase how relevant they are), you've got this other clash between "logic" (process!) and "emotion" (human beings!). We want to set up workplaces as logical, so we throw heaps of process at almost everything. Business process, though, tends to bury results. Why is that? Humans are emotional creatures, so they respond to emotional triggers -- not always process-driven ones. Read More...

How to step into a leadership role
Richard Chiumento·8 November 2016·People & Change
...The debate over whether leaders are born or made is a perennial topic in management and leadership circles. While there are undoubtedly individuals who are earmarked as having leadership potential from the outset of their careers, being a leader in today's challenging business environment is about far more than a set of postive personality traits and having the right skillset. BYOD: Large Firms need Clarity from the Top, not Ambiguity or Denial
JC GAILLARD·25 October 2016·Cyber Security
...In a previous article, we pointed out how millennials - whose digital-nativeness is often praised by employers - are actually endowed with less cybersecurity-savviness than their more senior co-workers. A key consequence of this is their failure to distinguish personal from professional uses of technology, and the fact that consumer and corporate tech are still two completely different worlds. This extends on my original article about the elements of architecture descriptions. Read More...
