Gianrico Farrugia, CEO, Mayo Clinic, Florida:
Consumers are driving really global changes that are redefining how we produce, how we deliver and how we distribute all goods and services. And clearly healthcare is a massive part of that”.

Gianrico Farrugia, CEO of the Mayo Clinic Florida, believes we are in the midst of a fourth industrial revolution driven by big data.  But in his keynote address at the recent NG Healthcare Summit, said healthcare is playing catchup when it comes to distribution.

Gianrico Farrugia, CEO, Mayo Clinic, Florida:
I take it for granted when I go order something that I can order a list of things, they get delivered to me in one box, yet they are from different parts of the United States or different parts of the world. When it comes to healthcare, we’re not there. So healthcare’s ripe for a change there, too.

You know this; part of the reason you are here. Fragmented care really conservatively costs us between 25 and 45 billion dollars and probably much, much more. And we still don’t capture healthcare. So if me as a patient I go and walk into a store and buy a cane, well, that’s part of the true cost of my care, yet we don’t capture it.

So we’re at the point, at this sort of this nexus in healthcare, where we are finally catching up with other industries to use big data to compute this, to capture this massive amount of information that we can now use to accurately compute costs, outcomes and value”.
