Telcos must get this right to win IoT

IDC predicts 22 billion installed IoT devices by 2018. What do Telcos need to get right to capitalise on the opportunity? An NG Telecoms Summit talking point.

As we near the end of the year, I thought it might be worth spending the next few weeks looking at what telecoms leaders are looking forward to in 2017. What are the biggest opportunities just over the horizon, and what do telcos need to get right to capitalise on them?

We start with the biggest potential opportunity of them all: the internet of things. IDC predicts 22 billion installed IoT devices by 2018. This is what one expert thinks you need to get right.

Joachim Horn, Chief Technology and Information Advisor, PLDT:

I think the IOT will not generate necessarily so much more data, but many more machines, like subscribers.  So the scale of the network and the IT environment will be very, very critical. The number one focus area will be to make this very cost efficient.  Because as we move in the IOT, we will see offers declining in the IOT space because the usage is relatively little.  At the same point in time, number of devices will escalate.  People talk about billions of devices within the next few years to come.
