About Roger Martin

Professor Roger Martin is a writer, strategy advisor and in 2017 was named the #1 management thinker in world. He is also former Dean of the Rotman School.

He is renowned for his strategic framework known as “Playing to Win,” co-authored with A.G. Lafley, the former CEO of Procter & Gamble. This framework emphasizes the importance of making clear choices about where and how to play in the marketplace to achieve sustainable competitive advantage.

Martin’s approach to strategy involves answering five key questions:

  • What is our Winning Aspiration?
  • Where will we Play?
  • How will we win where we have chosen to play?
  • What decisive capabilities will we need?
  • What infrastructure, systems, processes, and metrics will we need to support and measure our strategy over time?

By skilfully weaving between divergent and convergent thinking modes, Martin’s framework guides organizations in crafting a strategic direction that integrates creativity and rigor to position the firm for success. His Strategy Choice Cascade, consisting of five simple questions, forms the core of creating a great strategy by focusing on defining winning aspirations, choosing where to play, determining how to win, identifying necessary capabilities, and establishing management systems. Martin’s strategic insights have been instrumental in helping companies navigate the complexities of strategic decision-making and achieve competitive success in their industries.

Martin is a prolific author having published 12 books and over 350 magazine and newspaper articles, and economic reports.

His most well-known book, Playing to Win (Harvard Business Review Press, 2013) was co-authored with former Procter & Gamble CEO A.G. Lafley and introduced a model for strategy that has become one of the most used in the world today. Martin also published best-selling books on integrative thinking (The Opposable Mind – HBRP 2007) and business design (The Design of Business – HBRP 2009).

He continues to write prolifically on Medium and is a sought after commentator and advisor.
