Cloud adoption has become mainstream for enterprise CIOs, and cognitive IT can provide the perfect solution to effectively scale the model across the organization. CIOs are running in-house pilot projects to understand the right adoption paths for their business and apply the necessary changes to application and infrastructure architectures, service delivery, DevOps, production operations and governance.
Unfortunately, when introducing these new architectures and operating models, CIOs don’t have the luxury of time. Businesses are already using public clouds, DevOps tooling and automation to launch new applications every day. Successful cloud adoption must be done in a standardized way while optimizing the IT economics for the chief financial officer.
Mary Meeker’s Internet Trends 2017 report, published by Kleiner Perkins Caufield Byers, outlines this shift in enterprise concerns from data security and cloud economics to governance, compliance and vendor lock-in. One of the study’s key findings was that the number of global internet users hit 3.4 billion in 2016, a 10 percent increase from the previous year. Clearly, the age of the digital consumer has arrived, and organizations have to adapt.
Transforming IT Management
Cloud and automation technologies have proven to bend the cost curve, drive agility and deliver innovation in an as-a-service delivery model. However, it’s challenging to scale the cloud benefits across the enterprise in a standard way. To make things more difficult for today’s CIO, IT services must be federated and managed for easy consumption by users in a real-time model. Enterprise IT does not own or control the underpinnings of IT services while ensuring an experience that users are accustomed to in the consumer world.
Some CIOs are using the current IT service management model (ITSM). ITSM provides a request-triggered model for enterprise IT execution, but it isn’t designed to support this type of cloud infrastructure. Extending ITSM systems to manage a federated and dynamic operations model will only fall short, because it cannot scale to the level the enterprise needs. In this new IT era, machines create events, take action and eliminate workflows.
For cloud adoption to be consistent across providers and deliver a standard experience for consumers, it’s crucial to transform IT management approaches. In this new model, instead of operations driving governance, governance will be embedded within operational processes and applications. This approach will augment human intelligence with machine intelligence to automate operations management and governance of cloud IT and provide a new way of doing business for enterprise IT management.
Cognitive IT Empowers Enterprises
Cognitive computing enables the IT supply chain model by continuously matching IT demand with the right suppliers while automatically managing operations and the usage, complexity and change inherent to cloud ecosystems. Cognitive IT optimizes asset usage, cost, service delivery and operations at the same time. Users can engage the right provider for their workload needs, automatically provision IT services and autonomously drive break-fix events and usage based on the business’s digital needs.
Enterprise CIOs must prepare to operate in the new era of IT. This requires incremental shifts to set the organization and its business partners on the right trajectory. Enterprise CIOs preparing for the cognitive era of IT must:
- Educate enterprise IT and business leaders on the new capabilities driving IT from the cloud into the cognitive era.
- Understand how these cognitive capabilities benefit IT today by examining the current operations and usage of hybrid environments and establishing nonintrusive governance for cost, operations and usage.
- Work with internal IT teams and outsourced providers to further improve mean time to repair and service response, IT unit costs, direct and indirect costs by using cognitive capabilities from Watson to augment the current ITSM processes and operators.
- Learn from the new experience delivered by the IBM services platform from Watson to develop a road map for effectively transitioning and operating workloads and infrastructure in hybrid environments.
