As the fourth model to join the Range Rover family, the all-new 2018 Velar aims to transform our expectations of what a luxury SUV should be through the use of cutting-edge technology and new levels of innovation.
With three engine choices, multiple trims, and world-class off-road capability, the Velar slots into the brand’s line-up between Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Sport.
Find out how this prime example of next-generation engineering and design fits into your lifestyle with an in-depth exploration of our 2018 Range Rover Velar S P380 test model.
2018 Range Rover Velar S P380 Exterior
Already the recipient of multiple awards, the 2018 Velar offers a modern yet familiar design in a small SUV form factor. Its proportions and stance are very distinctly Range Rover, and bring to market a unique blend of luxury and off-road capability.
Starting at the front, the 2018 Velar features a short overhang and super-slim full-LED headlights for a sleek and minimalist look. A functional mesh-style grille allows optimum airflow to the engine compartment, while vents in the lower front fascia provide additional aerodynamic performance.
Our test model came painted in Fuji White, which really emphasized the floating roof design of the vehicle. Blacked-out side pillars provided a complete and distinct separation between the body-colored roof, while deployable door handles – a first for Range Rover – lay flush when locked or at speed, and allowed the clean lines of the vehicle to flow towards the rear without interruption.
The Velar’s rising waistline concludes in a long rear overhang that features an upward lift. This particular design choice gives a more aggressive feel to the vehicle’s overall stance, and helps highlight its lengthy profile.
Other exterior features on our 2018 Velar S test model include 19-inch 5-spoke wheels, a sliding panoramic roof, auto-dimming & heated door mirrors, and a roof spoiler that hides a full-length stop-lamp.
2018 Range Rover Velar S P380 Interior
Range Rover’s exacting design and construction standards are also reflected on the inside, with premium materials, impeccable craftsmanship, and state-of-the-art technologies.
As you slide onto the perforated leather seats, the first thing that’s certain to catch your attention is the all-new Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, which features two high-definition 10-inch touchscreens. With this gorgeous and intuitive system, you can access all of your entertainment option, like satellite radio, connected apps, and streaming media, as well as adjust crucial vehicle settings such as climate, ride height, and Terrain Response, to name a few.
This ground-breaking dual-screen design offers multiple ways to access your most commonly used settings, and also dedicates the top screen for navigation (when guidance is activated) so you won’t have to constantly switch between menu pages. And this advanced technology goes beyond the car itself as the InControl app allows you to remotely manage door locks, engine startup, and climate preferences.
Range Rover’s signature pop-up drive selector makes its return on the center console, while the steering wheel is enhanced with adaptive touch controls that offer different shortcuts based on the current use case – menu, radio, phone, and driver assistance controls light up accordingly when needed.
Enhancing the luxurious feel of the interior is an embossed Cut Diamond design on the dashboard and door panels, which elegantly complement the black leather surfaces and contrast stitching.
Our test model also featured standard ambient LED lighting with 10 colors, power reclining rear seats, rear privacy glass, 10-way adjustable driver’s seat, a Meridian sound system, and a heated steering wheel.
It’s undeniable that the 2018 Velar S is a standout in today’s SUV market – there are few vehicles that offer such high levels of technology, convenience, and comfort in an extremely thoughtful and upscale environment.
2018 Range Rover Velar S P380 Performance
As the “P380” label suggests, the 2018 Velar S is driven by a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine that produces 380 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. With the help of an 8-speed automatic transmission, the Velar S delivers instantaneous response and strong acceleration. Zero to 60 mph is achieved in just 5.3 seconds.
A lightweight aluminum body structure, permanent AWD, and electronic air suspension all contribute to the Velar’s handling dynamics, which feel more like a sports car than an SUV. Adaptive Dynamics continuously monitors wheel and body movement, and adjusts individual damping forces in the suspension to optimize for ride comfort and traction.
And when you’re ready to take your adventures off-road, the air suspension can increase ride height by 46mm to aid in clearing obstacles or debris. The Velar’s suspension is also self-leveling, meaning it will always maintain the best position whether you’re towing a trailer or carrying heavy cargo.
Each 2018 Velar comes standard with Terrain Response, an intelligent performance system that offers a selection of operation modes to conquer varying surface conditions. Characteristics such as engine profile, shift points, suspension, and stability control are optimized to deliver the best driving experience. And since the needs of every driver and road are unique, Range Rovers also offers a customizable Dynamic mode where you can manually set each parameter to your liking.
Additional performance features found on our test model include torque vectoring, low traction launch, electric power steering, and Intelligent Driveline Dynamics.
Fuel economy for the 2018 Range Rover Velar S P380 is an EPA estimated 18 mpg city and 24 mpg highway**.
