Digital Operating Model

New business challenges and opportunities are driving technology adoption at an increasing pace. Old Operating Models, will not cut it in the new world. Applying a simple “Plan-Build-Run” model or “Architecture-Project-Apps Support-Infrastructure Ops” misses the connection to the challenges faced by the business.

New practices and frameworks are continually emerging to meet these challenges. The current crop of new frameworks includes Lean Startup, IT4IT, DevOps, Scaled Agile, Social IT and Kanban.

These leading-edge practices are not neatly packaged and described. It is hard to figure out exactly where and how they fit. We see it as our role to stay up-to-date with all of this and to distil out the value and integration points with current models. It’s what we do as individuals anyway … because we like it!

To make sense of this, the Digital Operating Model concept has recently emerged as a way of fully expressing the integrated set of capabilities needed to run a modern technology portfolio. We recognise that is a multi-dimensional system operating together to deliver business technology value.

The heart of the model is an understanding of the portfolio of services and the delivery models of each. This gives insight into the processes, tools, measures and skills required to integrate supply & demand and to accommodate digital alongside the traditional portfolio. The value streams model presented by IT4IT is critical for reconciling IT capability with the needs and expectation of the business and their customers.
